The Secretary of the Army must house male and female recruits separately and securely during basic training. Sleeping and latrine areas must be separated by permanent walls, have separate entrances, and be supervised by at least one authorized, trained person. If an installation cannot meet these rules by October 1, 2001, recruits there must be put in single-sex barracks. Basic training means the Army’s initial training program for new recruits.
