Title 10 › Subtitle Subtitle B— - Army › Part PART IV— - SERVICE, SUPPLY, AND PROCUREMENT › Chapter CHAPTER 775— - DISPOSITION OF EFFECTS OF DECEASED PERSONS; CAPTURED FLAGS › § 7715
The Secretary of the Army must run and support an official system of Army museums under the Army’s Center of Military History. The National Museum of the United States Army is part of that system, and the Secretary can add other museums that honor installations, units, or branches if they meet set rules. The rules must cover things like historical importance, public access and education, and fitting the Army’s goal of saving its history. The Secretary must also create rules for closing museums. A museum cannot be closed until the Secretary sends the House and Senate Armed Services Committees a notice with a plan for saving or storing the collections, how staff issues will be handled, any public‑private efforts to keep the museum open, and a cost analysis for moving or preserving the collections, and 90 days pass after the committees get that notice. The Secretary may work with partners, including nonprofits, to help fund and run the museums, as allowed by law.
