Under rules the Secretary in charge sets, a service member accused of a civilian crime can be handed over to civilian authorities for trial if those authorities ask for the person. If someone is already serving a military sentence and is handed to civilian authorities and then convicted there, the military punishment is paused. After the civilian case, the military can ask for the person back to finish the military sentence.
