The Secretary of the Navy must retire any Regular Navy or Regular Marine Corps officer with a permanent W‑1 (warrant officer) or higher rank who asks to retire after 40 or more years of active service. Count those 40 years by adding up all of the officer’s active-duty service in the armed forces.
