The Secretary of the Navy can accept gifts that are customarily given to Navy ships—such as silver items, flags, books, or ship equipment and furniture—and keep them safe and cared for. Any necessary costs to care for those accepted gifts must be paid from the funds set aside for the maintenance and operation of the ships.
