The Air Force Secretary can settle marine claims against the United States for three things: damage caused by Air Force boats or other Air Force property; towing and salvage payments for those boats or property; and injuries on the water caused by Air Force employees or Air Force property. If a settlement is $500,000 or less, the Secretary may pay it. If over $500,000, it must be sent to Congress. Amounts up to $100,000 may be handled by a designated Air Force official.
