§1909 Policy on hazing

Title 14 › Subtitle SUBTITLE II— - PERSONNEL › Chapter CHAPTER 19— - COAST GUARD ACADEMY › Subchapter SUBCHAPTER I— - ADMINISTRATION › § 1909

Last updated Apr 6, 2026|Official source

Summary

The Academy must, with the Commandant’s approval, publish clear written rules that define hazing, try to prevent hazing, and set punishments like suspension or dismissal. If a cadet is accused of an offense that could lead to dismissal and asks in writing for a general court-martial, the cadet cannot be dismissed for that offense unless sentenced by that court. A cadet dismissed for hazing or bullying cannot return to the Corps or be appointed as a commissioned officer in the regular Coast Guard until 2 years after their class graduates. When writing the rules, the Superintendent should, as much as possible, define hazing as a cadet taking unauthorized authority that causes another cadet cruelty, humiliation, hardship, oppression, or the loss or reduction of any right.
