Title 14 › Subtitle SUBTITLE II— - PERSONNEL › Chapter CHAPTER 21— - PERSONNEL; OFFICERS › Subchapter SUBCHAPTER II— - DISCHARGES; RETIREMENTS; REVOCATION OF COMMISSIONS; SEPARATION FOR CAUSE › § 2154
Regular commissioned officers (not commissioned warrant officers) who are below the rank of rear admiral (lower half) must retire on the first day of the month after they turn 62. Officers at the rank of rear admiral (lower half) or higher must retire on the first day of the month after they turn 64, unless the President delays retirement up to the first day of the month after the officer turns 68, or the Secretary of the department that runs the Coast Guard delays it up to the first day of the month after the officer turns 66. The Secretary may also delay the 62‑year retirement for “health professions officers” who will be doing mainly patient care or other clinical work during the delay, but not past the first day of the month after they turn 68. The Secretary can define which Coast Guard members count as health professions officers. That category covers medical and dental staff, nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists, therapists, lab workers, medical administrative personnel, and similar clinical roles. These rules do not change any forced separations or disciplinary actions.
