An enlisted member may, by written agreement under rules the Secretary sets, extend or re‑extend their enlistment for up to six full years after the current term ends. They get the same pay and allowances as if discharged and reenlisted, and they keep any rights or benefits. Total extensions cannot exceed six full years.
