Unclaimed money and personal effects of deceased Coast Guard members must be kept safe and held for two years from the date of death. The Secretary must search for heirs and set rules for how this is done. If still unclaimed after two years, the items will be sold and the money deposited in the Treasury as miscellaneous receipts. Claims may be made within five years after that deposit and, if proved, will be certified to Congress.
