Title 14 › Subtitle SUBTITLE III— - COAST GUARD RESERVE AND AUXILIARY › Chapter CHAPTER 37— - COAST GUARD RESERVE › Subchapter SUBCHAPTER I— - ADMINISTRATION › § 3709
The Secretary can set rules that let an enlisted member of the Reserve be named a student aviation pilot. If the member is not already a qualified aviator, they must sign a written agreement to serve two years on active duty after finishing flight training, unless released earlier. A qualified civilian aviator can get a short refresher course. While training, the government pays for uniforms and equipment. After successful training and under the rules, a student can be made an aviation pilot. An aviation pilot can be released from active duty or discharged at any time under the Secretary’s rules. In peacetime, someone with the two‑year obligation may be kept for up to two more years. If they meet the qualifications in the rules, an aviation pilot may be appointed as an ensign in the Reserve.
