The Secretary may mark sunken vessels or other hazards in U.S. navigable waters and waters above the continental shelf to protect navigation. The owner must pay the marking costs until the hazard is removed, legally abandoned, or the Secretary decides otherwise. Payments go to the U.S. Treasury, and owners still must mark and remove hazards as law requires.
