Title 15 › Chapter CHAPTER 6— - WEIGHTS AND MEASURES AND STANDARD TIME › Subchapter SUBCHAPTER II— - METRIC CONVERSION › § 205b
The United States favors using the metric system for trade and commerce. Federal agencies must use metric units in purchases, grants, and other business activities by the end of the fiscal year 1992 when it is economically possible, unless it is impractical or would cause big inefficiency or loss of markets for U.S. firms (for example, if foreign rivals use non‑metric units). The Government will also help people learn the metric system through information and publications, and old-fashioned measurements can still be used for non-business activities.
