Title 15 › Chapter CHAPTER 49— - FIRE PREVENTION AND CONTROL › § 2225
Requires wired, single-unit smoke alarms in every guest room of public places that affect commerce, built to National Fire Protection Association Standard 74 or any later version. Also requires an automatic sprinkler system that meets NFPA 13 or 13‑R (or a later version) in those places, except for buildings that are 3 stories or lower. The sprinkler rule does not apply if a sprinkler system was put in before October 25, 1992 and met the safety standard then in effect that required a sprinkler head in each guest room sleeping area. If another applicable rule makes it impossible to follow a specific part of NFPA 13 or 13‑R, the site is exempt only from that particular part. State and local governments can still set or enforce their own fire safety rules. Definitions (one line each): Smoke detector — an alarm that senses smoke particles. Automatic sprinkler system — a supervised piping system with sprinklers that activate from heat, spray water on a fire, and provide required alarm signals. Governmental authority having jurisdiction — the government body that approves fire safety systems in a locality.
