The Director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology must help small and medium industrial firms by working with states, local governments, and other groups to expand access to Standard Reference Materials, Standard Reference Data, calibrations, and related technical services and to transfer expertise and technology. The Director must also evaluate inventions from small businesses or individuals that could improve competitiveness, support workshops on technical and business topics, share Malcolm Baldrige Quality Award information, and work with other federal agencies to give technical help to states and businesses.
