Defines nine key terms used in the chapter. "Cyber-physical systems" are physical machines or engineered systems that are tightly connected to computers and networks via sensors and controls so they can operate in real time, often for safety-critical uses. "Director" is the head of the Office of Science and Technology Policy. "Grand Challenge" is a big scientific or engineering problem with wide impact that needs networking and IT and teams from many fields. "High-end computing" means the most powerful computing systems and tools for huge calculations and large-scale data analysis. "Internet" is the worldwide web of connected federal and non-federal data networks. "Networking and information technology" covers advanced computing, communications, fast networks, software, and large data management. "Participating agency" refers to an agency named elsewhere in the law. "Program" means the Networking and Information Technology Research and Development Program described elsewhere in the chapter. "Program Component Areas" are the main topic groups that organize the Program’s projects and activities.
