Last updated Apr 6, 2026|Official source

Summary

Defines three key words used here. Contact lens fitting means the work that starts after the first eye exam and ends when the lens fits or, for a renewal, when the prescriber says no change is needed; it can include checking lens specs, an initial fit check (not for renewals), and needed medical follow-ups. Prescriber means an eye doctor or any person allowed by State law to write contact lens prescriptions who follows FDA rules. Contact lens prescription means a lawful prescription that has enough information to fill the lenses, such as patient and exam dates, issue and expiration dates, prescriber contact details, lens power and materials, base curve, diameter if needed, and manufacturer/brand info for private‑label lenses.
