Title 15 › Chapter CHAPTER 111— - WEATHER RESEARCH AND FORECASTING INNOVATION › Subchapter SUBCHAPTER III— - FEDERAL WEATHER COORDINATION › § 8545
The National Weather Service Director must put at least one warning coordination meteorologist at every weather forecast office. This cannot raise the agency’s approved number of full‑time jobs or create extra employees. Other staff can also carry out these duties if needed. Their main job is to help people and agencies use National Weather Service products so they can respond better to dangerous weather. They talk with the public, news media, pilots, sailors, farmers, and land and water managers. They work with forecast offices and state, local, and tribal agencies to improve or tailor forecasts and warnings, keep severe‑weather contact lists and procedures up to date, and coordinate preparedness and response with emergency managers. The Director can place them with state or local emergency managers, and if near a forecast office that counts as assignment to that office.
