Title 16 › Chapter CHAPTER 31— - MARINE MAMMAL PROTECTION › Subchapter SUBCHAPTER II— - CONSERVATION AND PROTECTION OF MARINE MAMMALS › § 1388

Last updated Apr 6, 2026|Official source

Summary

The Secretary can make cooperative agreements with Alaska Native organizations to protect marine mammals and to share management of subsistence use. Grants under these agreements may pay for things like population studies, harvest monitoring, joining federal, state, academic, or private research, and building co-management systems. These agreements do not change which governments control fish and wildlife or the legal or political status of Alaska Natives or their communities. The law authorizes $1,500,000 to the Secretary of Commerce and $1,000,000 to the Secretary of the Interior for each of the fiscal years 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, and 1999.
