Starting in fiscal year 2012, the Secretary may directly hire former resource assistants who meet Office of Personnel Management qualification standards, skipping normal federal hiring rules but still following sections 3303 and 3328 of title 5. To qualify, the person must have completed a rigorous summer internship with the Secretary, met its requirements, and later earned an undergraduate or graduate degree. Hiring must occur within two years after the degree date. Definitions: Secretary and former resource assistant are defined in section 1722.
