§2101a State-wide assessment and strategies for forest resources

Title 16 › Chapter CHAPTER 41— - COOPERATIVE FORESTRY ASSISTANCE › § 2101a

Last updated Apr 6, 2026|Official source

Summary

To get money under this program, the State forester or a similar State official must create and send the Secretary, within two years after the Food, Conservation, and Energy Act of 2008 became law, a statewide forest assessment and a long-term statewide strategy. The assessment must describe forest conditions and trends, threats that match national priorities, priority areas inside the State, and any regional priorities. The strategy must show how the State will deal with those threats and what resources are needed from all sources. The State must update and resend these documents when the Secretary asks. While making them, the State must work with its forest stewardship committee, state wildlife and technical agencies, federal land managers, relevant military bases where appropriate, and the State lead for the Forest Legacy Program, and include existing state plans like community wildfire protection and wildlife action plans. Once approved by the Secretary, these documents satisfy the chapter’s planning rules. Up to $10,000,000 may be appropriated each fiscal year for 2008 through 2023 to carry out this work. The Secretary can also use other planning funds, but the total spent on this in any year cannot exceed $10,000,000. The State forester must send an annual report to the Secretary showing how the funds were used.
