From October 21, 1998, money States pay the Forest Service for firefighting on non‑Federal lands that are not near National Forest System lands must be used to repay the federal account that paid for the work. The money stays available until it is spent and the Secretary may direct it for activities under 16 U.S.C. 2101 note, 2101–2110, 1606, and 2111.
