Defines the main words used in the chapter. Antarctic Convergence — the specific line made by joining the latitude and longitude points listed in the law. Antarctic marine living resources — fish, shellfish, crustaceans, birds, and all other living species found south of the Antarctic Convergence. Commission — the commission set up under article VII of the Convention to conserve those marine resources. Convention — the Convention on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources, signed at Canberra on May 7, 1980, and in force for the United States on April 7, 1982. Scientific Committee — the scientific committee created under article XIV of the Convention. Harvesting (or “harvesting or other associated activities”) — taking or trying to take Antarctic marine life (for example, hunting, killing, capturing), anything likely to lead to that, and shipboard operations that support or prepare such activities. Harvest — to do harvesting or those related activities. Import — to land, bring into, or try to bring into any place under U.S. jurisdiction. Person — an individual, business, or other entity under U.S. jurisdiction. Vessel of the United States — a vessel documented or numbered under U.S. law; a vessel owned in whole or part by the U.S., a U.S. state or subdivision, a U.S. citizen or national, or a U.S. corporation; or a vessel that was once U.S. documented but, in violation of U.S. law, was sold to a non‑citizen or placed under a foreign registry. Vessel subject to the jurisdiction of the United States — includes a vessel without nationality or one treated as without nationality under paragraph (2) of Article 6 of the 1958 Convention on the High Seas.
