Title 16 › Chapter CHAPTER 46— - PUBLIC UTILITY REGULATORY POLICIES › Subchapter SUBCHAPTER II— - STANDARDS FOR ELECTRIC UTILITIES › § 2624

Last updated Apr 6, 2026|Official source

Summary

State utility regulators or unregulated electric companies can set, approve, or let a lower electricity rate apply for a household’s essential needs than the standard rate under section 2621(d)(1). Each regulator or company decides what counts as “essential needs.” If a regulated utility or a nonregulated company still does not have such a lower rate in place two years after November 9, 1978, the state regulator (if it has rate-setting power) or, where appropriate, the nonregulated company must hold a hearing with evidence and decide whether to put that lower rate into effect. Section 2634 does not apply to these requirements.
