Defines important words used in the chapter. Conserve/conservation means using methods to protect and improve wild animals and their habitats for public benefit; it can include scientific work, habitat actions, education, population management, breeding, helping landowners, live trapping, and moving animals. Designated State agency means the state office that handles fish and wildlife duties. Fish and wildlife means wild animals not kept in captivity. Fund means the Wildlife Conservation and Appreciation Fund (established under section 3744(g)). National Fish and Wildlife Foundation means the nonprofit corporation set up under section 3701. Nonconsumptive activities are uses that do not take animals, like observing or photographing. Secretary means the Secretary of the Interior acting through the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Director. State lists the 50 States, DC, Puerto Rico, Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, U.S. Virgin Islands, and American Samoa. Wildlife conservation and appreciation project means a project focused on nonconsumptive use or on conserving species that are not normally taken for recreation, fur, or food, are not listed as endangered or threatened under the Endangered Species Act of 1973, and are not marine mammals.
