The Secretary of Agriculture may, for the United States, accept ownership of private or state lands in the townships mentioned in section 37. In return, the Secretary can give title to up to an equal value of surveyed, nonmineral national forest land in Montana, or allow the owner to cut and remove up to an equal value of timber from Montana national forests. The Secretary decides the values. Before any exchange, notice must run once a week for four successive weeks in newspapers where the lands or timber are located. Timber taken in exchange must be cut and removed under national forest laws and the Secretary’s supervision.
