Congress requires the Mojave Desert between Death Valley and Joshua Tree to be a national preserve and part of the National Park System. It now has temporary scenic-area status but has important natural and cultural values. Its wilderness must receive maximum protection under the Wilderness Act [16 U.S.C. 1131 et seq.], and services must comply with section 794 of title 29, Public Law 101–336 [42 U.S.C. 12101 et seq.].
