Title 16 › Chapter CHAPTER 1— - NATIONAL PARKS, MILITARY PARKS, MONUMENTS, AND SEASHORES › Subchapter SUBCHAPTER LIV— - EVERGLADES NATIONAL PARK › § 410r–5
Adds the Northeast Shark River Slough and the East Everglades to Everglades National Park to protect and restore the park’s water flow and wildlife. Congress found the park is nationally and internationally important but has been harmed by changes to water patterns. The park’s current boundary leaves out nearby lands and waters that are needed to fix those water problems. Fish and other wildlife have declined and wading bird numbers fell by 90 percent. Including the nearby areas will help stop more damage and save important ecosystems. Florida has offered to transfer about 35,000 acres to the park and has proposed working with the federal government to buy more land. Purposes are to increase protection, restore natural water conditions and ecology, improve public enjoyment, and manage the park so native plants and animals stay abundant, diverse, and behave naturally. Definitions: Secretary — Secretary of the Interior; addition — the about 107,600‑acre East Everglades area to be added; park — the current park plus that addition; project — the Central and Southern Florida Project.
