Federal mining laws still apply on federal land in the Area. But any prospecting or mining claims made after October 21, 1970 must follow reasonable rules the Secretary makes to protect scenery and to prevent pollution of streams and waters. Patents for claims after that date must say they are subject to those rules. Owners of already valid mining claims keep their existing rights.
