The Secretary of Agriculture may allow people, businesses, states, local governments, or nonprofits to use parts of national forests under rules and terms the Secretary sets. Such permits can last up to 30 years. Hotels, resorts, and other recreation or public-safety buildings may be allowed on up to 80 acres. Summer homes and stores may be allowed on up to 5 acres. Industrial or commercial buildings may be allowed on up to 80 acres if they fit with other forest uses. States, local governments, and public or nonprofit agencies may use up to 80 acres for educational or public facilities or activities. All uses must still let the public fully enjoy the forests’ natural, scenic, and recreational features.
