The Secretary of Agriculture can allow people to use and live on national forest land in Alaska for things like homes, recreation, public services, education, industry, farming, or business. He must follow rules he makes. Permits can last no more than 30 years and can cover up to 80 acres. While a permit is in force, that land cannot be claimed under public land laws, mining laws, or mineral leasing laws. The Secretary may cancel a permit if its terms are broken or for other valid reasons.
