Title 16 › Chapter CHAPTER 3— - FORESTS; FOREST SERVICE; REFORESTATION; MANAGEMENT › Subchapter SUBCHAPTER I— - GENERAL PROVISIONS › § 555
The Secretary of Agriculture may buy land or accept donated land when there is no suitable government land for national forest headquarters, ranger stations, housing, or other sites the Forest Service needs to do its work. Gifts of land can be taken for any national forest or experimental use. Money for a purchase must come from the budget set aside for the purpose. The Secretary can buy land even if there are existing rights or reservations on it, as long as those do not prevent the intended use. No more than $50,000 can be spent in any one fiscal year for these purchases.
