The Forest Service may charge Forest Service projects or federal agencies for using its equipment, billing funds paying for the work. The Chief Forester sets rates based on actual or estimated equipment costs, and payments are credited to Forest Service funds when recorded. The Service may also rent fire-control equipment to states, counties, private, or non‑Federal agencies under written agreements.
