§6854 Data consolidation and publication of route and area data for public recreational use

Title 16 › Chapter CHAPTER 87A— - MODERNIZING ACCESS TO PUBLIC LAND › § 6854

Last updated Apr 6, 2026|Official source

Summary

Within 5 years after April 29, 2022, the agencies that manage federal lands must, as much as possible, put GIS maps and data on their websites. The maps must show whether roads and trails are open or closed, seasonal closure dates, what classes of vehicles and kinds of recreation are allowed (including off‑highway vehicles, motorcycles, nonmotorized and electric bicycles, passenger vehicles, nonmechanized travel, and over‑snow vehicles), and the borders of areas where hunting or shooting is limited or closed. They must update the data at least twice a year, provide a way for the public to send questions or comments, and must not disclose the nature, location, character, or ownership of historic, paleontological, or archaeological resources.
