Last updated Apr 6, 2026|Official source

Summary

The Secretary of the Interior must, no later than 1 year after October 16, 2006, write guidance for hatchery education programs. The guidance must help hatcheries offer outdoor classes that mix school lessons with hands-on experiences about fish, aquatic life, habitats, and hatchery cultural history; promote understanding and conservation of those resources; and boost scientific literacy in both formal and informal education. Using that guidance, the Secretary may create or improve hatchery education programs with help from the Fish and Wildlife Management Assistance Program. Programs should match each hatchery’s resources and the chances to work with State, local, and private schools. The Secretary should work with state and local education officials and may work with partner groups.
