Title 17 › Chapter CHAPTER 9— - PROTECTION OF SEMICONDUCTOR CHIP PRODUCTS › § 909
The owner of a protected mask work may put a notice on the mask work itself and on masks or semiconductor chips that include it. The Register of Copyrights will give example ways and places to attach the notice, but those examples are not the only allowed methods. Putting the notice is not required for protection, but it counts as initial proof that the work is protected. The notice must include (1) the words "mask work", the symbol *M*, or the symbol Ⓜ, and (2) the owner’s name or a commonly used abbreviation of the name.
