Title 18 › Part PART I— - CRIMES › Chapter CHAPTER 50— - GAMBLING › § 1084
Makes it a crime for a business that takes bets to use a wire communication system to send bets, wagers, or information that helps place bets across state or country lines. A person who does this can be fined under federal law, imprisoned not more than two years, or both. The rule does not stop sending sports news. It also does not stop sending betting information when it is sent from a place where that betting is legal into another place where that betting is legal. It does not protect someone from being charged under state law. If a carrier is told in writing by law enforcement that its equipment is being used for illegal gambling across state lines, the carrier must stop providing that service after giving the subscriber reasonable notice. Carriers who follow such a notice are not liable, and people affected can ask a court or agency to review the action. "State" here means a U.S. State, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, or any U.S. territory or possession.
