Title 18 › Part PART I— - CRIMES › Chapter CHAPTER 83— - POSTAL SERVICE › § 1704
Makes it a crime to take, steal, get by tricking someone, or improperly take any key made for locks used by the Post Office Department or the Postal Service. That includes keys for mail, mail bags, lock boxes, lock drawers, or other approved mail containers. It is also illegal to make, forge, or have such a key or lock if you plan to misuse, sell, or give it away. A contractor who hands finished or partial locks or keys to anyone not officially authorized by the Postmaster General, the contractor, or the contractor’s agent also breaks the law. Someone who does any of these things can be fined, put in prison for not more than ten years, or both.
