It is a crime to carry out, try to carry out, or plan with others a scheme that uses travel or communication across state lines or to other countries to bribe anyone to affect a sporting contest. A person convicted can be fined, jailed for up to 5 years, or both. The rule covers any contest in any sport that is announced to the public before it happens. "Person" means a person or any business or group. State and local laws and powers are not taken away by this rule.
