It is a crime for the owner, captain, person in charge, crew member, or anyone else in control of a private boat, U.S. or foreign, in U.S. territorial waters to on purpose destroy or damage the vessel or to knowingly let the boat be used as a hideout by people planning crimes against the United States, breaking U.S. treaties or international law, or trying to cheat the United States. A person who does this can be fined, sent to prison for up to ten years, or both. If the boat is used this way with the owner’s or captain’s knowledge, the United States can seize and keep the boat and its equipment.
