If someone who already has a prior sex‑offense conviction violates an offense in this chapter, the maximum prison term can be up to three times the usual maximum, unless section 3559(e) applies. A "prior sex‑offense conviction" means a past conviction under this chapter, chapters 109A or 110, or section 1591, or a state or military conviction for the same conduct. "State" means the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. commonwealths, territories, and possessions.
