Knowingly taking money that a U.S. court clerk or officer holds in the court’s registry is embezzlement. If over $1,000, the penalty can be a fine (up to the amount taken or higher) and/or up to 10 years in prison; if $1,000 or less, the fine and/or jail time is up to 1 year.
