People or companies exporting used cars by air or ship must give Customs the vehicle identification number (VIN) and proof of ownership for each car at least 72 hours before export. Customs will randomly check cars based on theft risk, compare selected VINs with the National Crime Information Center, and must give any VINs it collected to the FBI director if asked.
