Funds given to the Architect of the Capitol can be used to rent space in Washington, D.C., and nearby areas outside the Capitol Grounds for the Senate, the House, the United States Capitol Police, and the Architect of the Capitol, and to pay costs tied to those leases. Before leasing, the Architect must send written notice and get approval: Senate space needs approval from the Senate Appropriations Committee and the Senate Committee on Rules and Administration; House space needs approval from the House Appropriations Committee and the House Office Building Commission; other covered space needs approval from both the House and Senate Appropriations Committees. This has applied since fiscal year 2004 and continues each year.
