Except for 31 U.S.C. 1341, U.S. Capitol Police must assess threats to each former Speaker when they leave and, if needed, provide protection for up to one year after they leave; they may refuse it anytime. After one year the Police will reassess and may extend protection if threats remain and former Speaker agrees. Police may enter written agreements with state or local agencies.
