As of October 1, 1981, most statutory jobs in the Office of the Secretary were ended. Five jobs were kept: the Secretary of the Senate, the Assistant Secretary, the Parliamentarian, the Financial Clerk, and the Director of the Office of Classified National Security Information. The Secretary may now create whatever staff positions are needed and hire people and set their pay. No employee’s yearly pay can be higher than the Secretary’s yearly pay minus $1,000. Any job that is allowed by law and paid from the Senate’s contingent fund is not changed.
