Title 20 › Chapter CHAPTER 28— - HIGHER EDUCATION RESOURCES AND STUDENT ASSISTANCE › Subchapter SUBCHAPTER IV— - STUDENT ASSISTANCE › Part Part A— - Grants to Students in Attendance at Institutions of Higher Education › Subpart subpart 9— - teach grants › § 1070g–2
The Education Department sets the application dates for TEACH Grants and decides what information applicants must give. Students who apply must show they meet federal student-eligibility rules, have a GPA comparable to 3.25 on a 4.0 scale (or, for first-year undergrads, use high school GPA), or scored above the 75th percentile on at least one admissions-test section, and are finishing or will finish the coursework needed to start teaching. Teachers or career changers seeking a graduate grant must be in a shortage subject (for example math, science, special education, English language learning) or be using high-quality alternative certification like Teach for America. Applicants must agree to teach full time for at least 4 academic years within 8 years after finishing the program. They must teach in eligible low-income schools and in qualifying fields (such as those above or other approved high-need areas), submit an employment certification from the school’s chief administrator, and meet state teacher certification rules. If they do not meet the service requirement, grant money will be converted to a Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan with interest from the grant date. Recipients can ask for reconsideration; the Department must decide within 90 days and can reinstate the grant, erase interest or loan balances, correct credit reports, and extend the remaining service time. The Department will keep and publish lists of qualifying schools and high-need fields, send yearly notices about how and when to submit employment certification, adjust deadlines if the service window is extended, and offer alternatives when a school no longer exists or will not cooperate.
