Names and explains important words used in this part of the law. American folklife means the traditional cultural expressions shared by families, ethnic groups, occupations, religions, or regions. It covers many kinds of creative and symbolic activities—like customs, beliefs, skills, language, stories, art, buildings, music, play, dance, drama, ritual, pageantry, and crafts—that are mainly learned by talking, copying, or performing and kept alive without formal schooling. Board means the Center’s Board of Trustees. Center means the American Folklife Center. Group means a State or public agency or any nonprofit society, institution, organization, association, or establishment in the United States. Librarian means the Librarian of Congress. State includes the several States of the Union, Puerto Rico, the District of Columbia, Guam, American Samoa, and the Virgin Islands. Workshop means an activity meant mainly to teach skills, build appreciation or enjoyment of folklife for amateurs, students, or nonprofessionals, or to support scholarship or teaching.
