Title 20 › Chapter CHAPTER 43— - AMERICAN FOLKLIFE PRESERVATION › Subchapter SUBCHAPTER II— - VETERANS’ ORAL HISTORY › § 2141
Creates a new, federally funded program to collect and preserve audio and video recordings of American war veterans’ personal stories. The program must coordinate these recordings across the nation and help local projects save veterans’ memories so people today and in the future can hear veterans speak about war and the sacrifices they made. Congress says many Americans served in past wars: 4,700,000 in World War I; 16,500,000 in World War II; 6,800,000 in the Korean Conflict; 9,200,000 in the Vietnam Conflict; and 3,800,000 in the Persian Gulf War. The Department of Veterans Affairs reports almost 19,000,000 war veterans live in the country now. Only about 3,400 World War I veterans remain, and of roughly 6,000,000 World War II veterans still living, almost 1,500 die each day. Oral histories are very valuable, and the Library of Congress, with nearly 119,000,000 items and the American Folklife Center, is named to store and share the collection.
