Title 20 › Chapter CHAPTER 57— - JAMES MADISON MEMORIAL FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM › § 4506
Students who get a fellowship must show they can and plan to teach in secondary schools. The college must try to help them meet that goal. Each recipient must sign an agreement to teach full-time in a secondary school within 5 years after finishing the education the fellowship paid for. They must teach at least one year for every year they got help. If they do not, they must pay back the fellowship plus 6% interest per year and any reasonable collection costs for each school year they did not teach. A recipient is not treated as breaking the agreement while they are: studying full-time in a teaching program at an eligible school; serving in the U.S. armed forces for up to 3 years; temporarily totally disabled for up to 3 years with a sworn statement from a qualified physician; unable to get a job for up to 12 months because they must care for a disabled spouse; or trying and unable to find full-time work or full-time teaching work for a single period not over 12 months.
